Dodging is only half of the move. The square you run to needs a way out too. You are a pickle on a 3x3 deli counter, and sandwiches keep coming down. A shadow marks the square the next one is going to hit, so step off it. Jumping straight up will not save you. The slice you escaped does not disappear. It lands on the square you just left and becomes a step. Hop onto it and you are one layer higher - one layer at a time, never two, and never by walking.
